Why do we tend to avoid the use of elastomers with the presence of chlorine?
Chronic exposure to irritating gases can cause serious damage
to health.
Since its fumes are considered highly toxic, we tend to avoid the use of
elastomers that contain chlorine.
Among these we find:
Epichlorohydrin (ECO) is an organic compound, a halogenated derivative of propylene oxide, which is used as a solvent for some elastomers.
Epichlorohydrin rubbers are special elastomers resistant to fluids and ozone, have a high resilience and flexibility at low temperatures as well as a high impermeability to gases. Epichlorohydrin has an irritating action on the skin and often causes allergic manifestations.
Other elastomers that contain chlorine are:
– CR (Polychloroprene or Neoprene) resists oils, cutting, aging, abrasion and combustion and is used in the automotive, chemical, mining, construction and agricultural industries.
– CSM (Polyethylene chlorine sulfonate) has excellent gas impermeability. It resists cutting, high temperatures, flame, abrasion and aging.
Both can be replaced by other materials depending on the specific
application needs.
